Why

Are you giving up a piece of yourself for the dollar?

Viktor Frankl, born in 1905, was a neurologist and psychiatrist as well as a Holocaust survivor. His best-selling book Man’s Search for Meaning chronicles his experiences as a concentration camp inmate and describes his psychotherapeutic method of finding meaning in all forms of existence, even the most sordid ones, and thus a reason to continue living.

Whilst the lives of many people may look great on the outside, for all their financial success they feel purposeless and unfulfilled. They spend great energy pursuing material goals, and sometimes feel trapped in jobs, relationships or lifestyles, even though they yearn for a different way of life. Many are intelligent, self-aware individuals but all too often their wish for change is immobilised by the relentless pressures of the material world. A devotion to a frantic, endlessly busy life conceals their relationship with money.

It’s a world of quiet desperation.

Money and the meaning of lifeIf we understood the true role of money in our lives, writes philosopher Jacob Needleman, we would not think simply in terms of spending it or saving it. Money exerts a deep emotional influence on who we are and what we tell ourselves we can never have.

Our long unwillingness to understand the emotional and spiritual effects of money on us is at the heart of why we have come to know the price of everything, and the value of nothing.

In his book A Richer Life (2006) Justin Hooper wrote: “I’m vitally concerned with the way many of today’s corporations have lost their way ethically and have a negative impact on the environment and society as a whole. I see this as a short-term earnings focus…and this drives management decisions and actions.

“…when today’s leaders start taking a more values-based, longer term view of their own finances, they are far more likely to do the same with the way they manage the corporations which have such an impact on our world at large.”

By providing a simple but effective process for bringing together money and meaning for people of influence, we believe that our contribution will have far greater positive consequences than the obvious.
